Daniel Joshua Kemp’s Story
In January 2010, I discovered I was expecting my third child. At 22 weeks, during a
routine check-up at the fetal assessment center, doctors uncovered a rare heart
disorder in my baby. Shortly after, further testing was done for DiGeorge Syndrome—a
condition caused by a missing 22nd chromosome that results in a severely
compromised immune system and minimal chances of survival.
Doctors presented us with the option of termination, but as a mother, I chose to trust in
God, the giver of life. I stood firmly on His promise in James: “Every good and perfect
gift comes from above.” Regardless of the test results, abortion was never an option.
Two weeks later, the results came back negative for DiGeorge Syndrome. Doctors were
baffled, but I knew it was God’s intervention. I carried my baby to term, and on
September 6, 2010, Daniel Joshua Kemp was born. He had a congenital heart defect
known as Interrupted Aortic Arch, along with Arterial and Ventricular Septal Defects, as
well as Hirschsprung’s Disease.
The name Daniel held profound meaning for us, inspired by the biblical account of
Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). Just as God protected Daniel, I believed He would
protect my son. Our journey was one of faith in action.
A Journey of Surgeries and Miracles
At just seven days old, Daniel underwent his first open-heart surgery, which lasted
seven hours. Ten days later, he had another procedure to address a diaphragm shift
caused by the surgery. This was followed by a repair for Hirschsprung’s Disease.
Unexpectedly, ten days later, his aortic arch repair collapsed, requiring another round of
open-heart surgery.
Daniel remained hospitalized for the first 3½ months of his life. At four months old, after
just three weeks at home, he was rushed back to the hospital with bloody stools and
vomiting. On January 13, 2011, he began bleeding profusely, and doctors worked
tirelessly to save his life. By early morning, they prepared us to say goodbye to our son
as they wheeled him into emergency surgery to remove a duodenal ulcer.
At that moment, I had no faith left, but my pastor encouraged us to entrust Daniel to
God. It was a pivotal moment of surrender. We prayed, released our fears, and allowed
God to work His will in Daniel’s life. Against all odds, Daniel survived.
Ongoing Battles
As Daniel grew, his medical challenges continued. At four years old, he was diagnosed
with Pancreatic Divisum, a rare condition that caused recurring pancreatitis and
abdominal pain. At 12 years old, he was further diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis
(EOE), a condition marked by a buildup of white blood cells in the esophagus.
Additional discoveries included 13 pairs of ribs and 11 pairs of vertebrae, further
highlighting his uniqueness.
Despite these challenges, Daniel has shown incredible resilience.
Where He Is Now
Daniel celebrated his 14 th birthday on September 6, 2024—a testament to his strength
and God’s faithfulness. He is currently enrolled in a soccer program, pursuing his dream
of becoming an athlete. The scars on his body tell a story of battles fought and won,
serving as a daily reminder of his courage and perseverance.
The journey to recovery has been marked by physical, emotional, and mental
challenges, but Daniel’s tenacity, the love of his family, and the support of friends have
shaped him into the strong young man he is today.
In October 2024 he started doing what he loves. He has started a soccer programme
that is training him to become a goal-keeper. And I as is mother look forward to see his
continued growth on this part of his journey in making him become what he dreams to
be.
Daniel’s story is one of resilience, strength, and unwavering faith. It is a powerful
reminder that even in the face of overwhelming odds, hope and determination can
prevail.
